We issue permits and certificates. We also handle inspections requests. This includes smoke and carbon monoxide alarms compliance for the sale or transfer of residential property. We also educated the public on fire safety and prevention.

The mission of the Fire Investigation Unit is to investigate and determine the origin and cause of all fires and explosions that occur in the City of Lynn, as per
Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 148, § 2.

The members of the Fire Investigation Unit are Nationally Certified Fire and Explosion investigators. The Fire Investigation Unit is also tasked with investigating injuries or deaths caused by burns in accordance with the laws of the State of Massachusetts.

Arson Watch Reward Program
UP TO A $5,000 REWARD
The program provides monetary rewards to individuals who provide information resulting in the arrest and conviction of the responsible parties. Over the course of the program, more than 200 communities have participated in the Arson Tip Award Program. In Massachusetts, a Reward Selection Committee, comprised of a representative from the Office of the Attorney General, Commissioner of Insurance, MA State Police, and two representatives of the Property Insurance Industry, reviews all nominations and makes the final decision in granting rewards. In Rhode Island, this Committee is comprised of a representative from the Department of Public Safety-State Fire Marshal, Department of Business Regulation Insurance Division, Fire Chiefs Association, and Police Chiefs Association. Any member may recuse him/herself for good reason. All individual rewards are granted based on the amount of information that is given and the extent of assistance the information provides in solving an arson crime, with a maximum of $5,000. Forty-five percent of reward recipients agree to a public presentation with media coverage. No Reward Application will be considered until after an indictment has been made.
